Gardeners of Glasgow

“Gardening the First of Arts”, is one of the fourteen Craft Guilds which together form the Trades House of Glasgow.

One hundred years ago today, the Incorporation matriculated its coat of arms. It has served us well in the intervening century.

1605 Gardeners in Glassgow

Around 1605, a group of gardeners received a charter from the City of Glasgow, granting them specific trade rights. This document was lost in 1646 when the group's leader was quarantined during a plague outbreak.

In 1690, these trade privileges were legally restored. They remained in effect until 1846, when a law ended exclusive trading rights in Scottish towns. Since then, the organization has focused on charitable work and welcomes all members.

The Incorporation of Gardeners has some 750 Members. Our most distinguished member is His Majesty King Charles III
